Hi! I was just thinking about what you said in your post about your lips (which are gorgeous, btw, just like the rest of you), and it really struck me, how when women are "complimented" on their physical features it can be in the most derogatory manner. And it was just mind blowing to think how far the patriarchy and oppression extends.
I hope you don’t mind me answering publicly. Firstly thanks :) I do those posts anytime I feel like I need a positive affirmation about my body. I agree that it’s quite disheartening when we realise how little ownership we have over our bodies. We view ourselves through a lens of patriarchy: what makes us ‘sexy’ is often not what makes us feel sexy but what fits into what we’re told is sexy. The extreme is catcalling/street harassment but we participate in it anytime we tell our friend wear something more flattering, despite how happy they feel in what they are wearing; or when we assure someone that they’re skinnier than the other chick.
It’s really hard to appreciate our bodies as beautiful bodies, and I’m trying really hard to divorce my mind from the brainwashing it’s been put through by society
